Food & drink polic. IES In general, food and drinks are allowed in my regular in-person class. Virtually: you can have a snack or a drink. However if it becomes a distraction this rule will change. As long as students can handle the responsibility. This policy is subject to change at my discretion, and at any time. Bell Ringer ➢ ➢ Everyday at the beginning of class, you will be expected to do bell work. The bell ringer will be in a form of a question in the chat each day. Answering this question will be how attendance is done. You will have the first 5 minutes of class to write down the question and answer it for that day. Bell work is worth 5 points each day. “It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect it’s successful outcome. ” -William James Missing Work and Absences ➢ ➢ ➢ Each assignment carries a due date or deadline. The deadlines in this course are very reasonable and I expect that you will put forth effort daily in this class to complete these assignments. Any assignment will be marked as missing after the due date if it is not turned in. ○ You may make this up with a 10% grade reduction. ○ After End of Unit Summative no more work can be turned in for that unit. If you are absent, you are responsible for completing your make-up work. ○ 1 -2 days for make-up for each day absent is generally what is given. Competency Based Learning What is it? ● Your progress through your coursework is based on your ability to prove you have mastered competencies—the skills, abilities, and knowledge required in an area of study. You do this by passing assessments after you've reviewed the learning resources. How does it Work in Our Classroom 1. 2. 3. 4. Pre Assessment of your knowledge on each unit’s learning objectives (competencies) and attempt to answer major essential question(s). ○ Essential Questions (often called EQs) are deep, fundamental and often not easy-to-answer questions used to guide your learning. Formative assessments to help you gain understanding towards mastery on individual learning objectives. ○ The goal of formative assessment is to monitor your learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used to improve your learning, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and target areas that need work. ○ Examples of formative assessments include asking students to: ■ draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic. ■ submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture. ■ Complete a worksheet to practice the skill or engage in the knowledge needed Summative assessment over several related learning objectives that relate to an important biological process or topic. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate your learning at the end of an instructional unit. ○ Examples of summative assessments include: ■ midterm exam ■ final project ■ End of unit test Post Assessment of your knowledge on each of the unit’s learning objectives and revisal of your essential questions to reflect mastery. Mastery Scale 1 2 3 4 5 Description I don't know and/or can't do any part of the learning target. With help, I know and can do some of the learning target. I know and can do some of the easy parts of the leaning target but can not do the harder parts. I know and can do all of the learning target without mistakes I know and can do all of the learning target well enough that I can teach it to someone else and make connections that were not taught to me.

The only exception is if you miss the previous TWO days before the test. An absence the day before the major summative will not excuse you from it. ● Retakes are an earned privilege. In order to be eligible for a test retake, the following criteria must be understood/met: 1. All formative assignments have been completed. Summatives and Retakes 2. Student completes summative corrections 3. Attend tutoring if needed 4. Retake must be done outside of regular class time before the next unit assessment. ● It makes no sense to allow a retake if there was no attempt at learning prior, nor would it be wise to retake without learning from the mistakes made the first time.
