Biology Activity 2: Implantation and Embryo Development (page 32)
From Fertilization to Implantation • After fertilization, the zygote starts dividing (multiplying) in the oviduct to form the embryo • The embryo then moves to the uterus to be implanted after about 4 -6 days
Implantation of the Embryo • After the embryo gets implanted in the uterus, it produces a chemical substance that blocks menses • The fertilized egg gets nutrients from its reserves for a week after implantation • Then after that, the nutrients are provided through the placenta and umbilical cord
Placenta and Umbilical cord • The placenta is an organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy • The placenta is the organ of exchange between the baby and the mother • The umbilical cord connects the baby to the mother through the placenta
Development of the Fetus • During pregnancy, the fetus develops inside a sac filled with liquid. The liquid is called amniotic fluid or amnion • The first organ to develop is the heart. It is followed by the head, arms and legs • From the first month, all organs are already formed
