BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY TOPIC 1 MRS. FEDUNEC
BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY • the number and variety of organisms in an area • Do you think biological diversity would be higher near the equator or near the Artic Circle? Why?
VARIATION: • a change in characteristics of an organism caused by environmental or genetic factors. • Examples:
SPECIES • 1. They can breed in nature • 2. Their offspring can breed also. • Example: • When you breed a donkey with a horse you get a mule. While the donkey and horse can have offspring, the mule cannot produce children. Are a donkey and a horse the same species? A donkey and a mule?
VARIATIONS WITHIN A SPECIES: • Name a species you know, and list differences within a species. • Example: homo sapiens (humans) are a species; what are some genetic differences between you and other people?
VARIATION AMONG SPECIES • Think of different species within a similar genus (larger description) • Example: big cats
SPECIATION • the evolution of different species through a common ancestor • Can be seen in phylogenic trees
VARIATIONS FOR SURVIVAL • Structural adaptation: a physical characteristic that helps and organism survive. (what an organism has) • Behavioural adaptation: a behavioural characteristic that helps and organism survive. (what an organism does)
VIDEO HTTPS: //WWW. YOUTUBE. COM/WATCH? V=VFCRXLK 6 QSS • Watch this video. • Answer the questions related to it
THE VALUE OF VARIATION • You are not all susceptible to the same diseases • Individuals are more likely to survive a variety of changes • Example: extinction of bananas! • http: //www. cnn. com/2015/07/22/africa/bananapanama-disease/index. html
BANANAS ARTICLE • Each student will be required to submit a video to the classes Flipp. Grid page discussing and answering questions about biological diversity in regards to this article • For more details visit the assignments page
DIVERSITY INDEX • measure of biological diversity in an area. • High diversity index is good because it means a lot of different kinds of animals can live there, not just the robust ones.
