Bio-ecological Approach Urie Bronfenbrenner Page 59 -60
Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917 -2005) • Emphasizes environmental factors • Theory is that development reflects the influence of 5 environmental systems • He did add biological influences to his theory, however environmental contexts still predominate
• • Work from the inside out Different layers of environment Different levels of society that can affect you For the test you will not need to reproduce this, but you will need to know the vocabulary and how it differs
Microsystem • The setting in which the individual lives • This includes the person’s family, peers, school, and neighbourhood • It is the microsystem that the most direct interactions with social agents take place – with parents, peers, and teachers • Individual is viewed not as a passive recipient of experiences in these settings, but as someone who helps construct them
Mesosystem • Involves relations between microsystems or connections between contexts • Examples are the relation of family experiences to school experiences, school experiences to church experiences, and family experiences to peer experiences • EXAMPLE: Children whose parents have rejected them may have difficulty developing positive relations with teachers
Exosystem • Is involved when experiences in another social setting – in which the individual does not have an active role – influence what the individual experiences in an immediate context • Example: work experiences can affect a woman’s relationship with her husband their child. Wife may have promotion that means more travel, marital conflict, change parent-child interactions
Macrosystem • The culture in which individuals live • Behaviour patterns, beliefs, and all other products of a group of people that are passed on from generation to generation
Chronosystem • Patterning of environmental events and transitions over the life course, as well as socio-historical circumstances • Example: technological revolution differ depending on age, education, social-economic status, and geography • Babies born today where Internet access is available will never experience the Technological Revolution in the same way as their parents or grandparents • Every year technologies are redefining each of the systems, including personal space, behaviour, family life, education, health, community relaitonships, work life, legal boundaries and political systems
