BIODIVERSITY LOSS A RED ALERT FOR HUMAN BEINGS
BIODIVERSITY LOSS : A RED ALERT FOR HUMAN BEINGS ON EARTH PRESENTATION BY- SUMAN DEY B. Ed. 3 rd SEMESTER ROLL NO. – 47 UNIVERSITY B. T & EVENING COLLEGE
CONCEPT OF BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity is the distribution, number, variety and variability of the living organisms over time. Biodiversity may be- 1. Within species (genetic diversity). 2. Between species (species diversity). 3. Between ecosystem (ecosystem diversity). 1 2 3
STATUS OF INDIAN BIODIVERSITY AT A GLANCE
BIODIVERSITY LOSS • Biodiversity loss is defined as the long term or permanent qualitative and quantitative reduction in the components of biodiversity and their potential to provide goods and services.
REASONS FOR THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY • The reason for the biodiversity loss can attributed to the following causes- Habitat loss. Introduction of new species(alien species invasion) Population growth. Pollution. Over consumption. Also known as HIPPO effect.
HABITAT LOSS • Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation occurs when natural habitats are converted for human use such as agriculture, infrastructure development (roads, buildings, dams etc. )
INTRODUCTION OF NEW SPECIES (ALIEN SPECIES INVASION) • Alien species invasion is the condition in which a nonnative species which is introduced in a particular region destroys the native flora & of the region. PAPAYA MEALY BUG (NATIVE TO GAUTEMALA & MEXICO)
POPULATION GROWTH • Growth of population usually leads to excess demand for goods and services which directly destroys the biodiversity by overexploitation. SHIFTING AGRICULTURAL PRACTICE IN INDIA
POLLUTION • Pollution directly affects the physiology and the metabolism of the plants and animals (biodiversity) thus greatly hampers the biodiversity of a region. GANGETIC DOLPHIN ( FRESH WATER DOLPHIN)
OVER CONSUMPTION • Over consumption is the indirect effect of population explosion which results in unsustainable exploitation of biodiversity. Dioscorea deltoidea (NEPAL YAM)
STEPS TO REDUCE BIODIVERSITY LOSS • We need to identify critical wildlife habitat for species at risk. • We need to restore the already destructed habitat of the flora and fauna and to limit its further destruction. • We need to control and eradicate the alien species. • We need to check pollution as much as possible • Overconsumption must be replaced by judicial consumption. • The policy and practice of sustainable development must be implemented. • Last but not the least there must be enough awareness among the general public for the conservation of biodiversity.
