Steve Jobs’ childhood February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011 • Born in San Francisco • Adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs • Raised in Mount View, California • Had an adopted sister named Patty • Attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon but dropped out after a semester • First job he got was for Atari.
Steve’s Career • Apple is incorporated by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ron Wayne in 1976. • The Apple I is released in 1976 • In 1978, the Apple II becomes the first mass market personal computer. • The Apple III is released in 1980. It was a failure. • In September of 1985 Steve Jobs resigns from Apple and starts Ne. XT with five other former Apple emploies.
Steve’s Career (continued) • Steve created Pixar in 1986 • Ne. XT partners with IBM in 1988. • Ne. XT partners with Businessland to help sell Ne. XT computers to corporate America. • Apple buys Ne. XT for $400 million in 1996 • Jobs introduces the i. Mac in 1998. • Jobs introduced i. Tunes for windows in 2003. • He is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003. • He dies in October of 2011.
Steve’s contribution to technology • Marketed the first commercially successful computer, the Apple II. • Popularized Xerox PARC’s graphic user interface. • Played a roll in introducing one of the first, widely available laser printers. • The i. Pod and i. Tunes changed the way people bought and listened to music.
Contribution to technology (continued) • The i. Phone is one of the most popular Smart Phone and made it easy to access apps, e-mail, calendars and contacts all in one phone. • The Mac OS is the foundation of all of the Apple devices and they wouldn’t be the same without the Mac OS.
Bill Gates’ childhood October 28, 1955 • Born in Seattle, Washington • In 1967, he enrolled in an exclusive private school in Seattle called the Lakeside School where he meets Paul Allen. • In 1973, Gates enrolled in Harvard as a pre-law major but dropped out two years later. • In 1975, he offers to develop software for MITS Altair. They eventually accept and purchase his language for $3, 000.
Bill’s Career • In 1975, Paul and Bill register Microsoft as a trademark. • In 1977, they set up Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico. • 1979: Microsoft relocates to Bellevue, Washington. • 1983: Allen leaves after developing Hodgkin’s disease. • 1986: Microsoft goes public. • 1987: Bill is 31 and the youngest billionaire alive. • 1994: Bill marries Malinda French and the Gateses create the William H. Gates foundation which later becomes the Bill & Malinda Gates foundation. • 1995: Bill become the richest man in the world. • 2000: Bill steps down as the CEO of Microsoft.
Bill’s Biggest Contributions • He popularized the home computer. Paul Allen and Bill Gates created a language called BASIC which they sold to Altair which paved the way for the Home Computing era in the 80’s. • He commercialized the operating system. Bought the 86 – DOS from the Seattle Computer Company. • Launching Windows 95. Seventy percent of all computers run on some form of windows. • Has donated $36. 2 billion to charity. Through his charity the Bill and Malinda Gates foundation.
Who do I think is better? • I think both men have contributed a lot to the world of technology. I think the men are equal in their accomplishments but I like Bill Gates more because he has contributed so much of his money to charity. Even though he was know to use unethical forms of business I think his donations have out shone his mistakes.
