Conservation • Conservation includes preservation along with up gradation of the genetic potential and management of a breed for use in future. • It covers both continued maintenance of genetic variability, improvement and sustainable utilization by exploiting the genetic variability. • It is also defined as the management of the biosphere of human use for benefits in present time together with maintaining its potentiality to meet the future needs.
Preservation • Preservation covers the continued maintenance of genetic variability. • It is required when population reaches an endangered level or on the verge of extinction. • Preservation and Multiplication is required for animals having unique traits or exceptional genetic merit.
Causes of loss of genetic diversity • • • Systems breed dilution (a) Upgrading (b) Cross breeding Geographical reorganization Purpose based farming system Economic viability Modern Agriculture practices Other factors
Objectives of conservation • Genetic insurance • Economic potential in a particular environment • Environmental considerations • Scientific study • Energy source
Methods of conservations • In-situ conservation • Ex-situ conservation (a) In vivo method (b) In vitro method
