Big Idea How do air pressure and temperature vary in the atmosphere?

Energy in Earth’s Atmosphere Chapter 7, Section 4

Key Questions What kinds of questions can you ask based on the picture?

Key Questions SWBAT describe what form does energy from the sun travel to Earth SWBAT explain what happens to the sun’s energy when it reaches Earth

Electromagnetic wave This is the type of energy that can travel even through the vacuum of space.

radiation Radiation is the movement of energy through space. Where else have we learned about radiation?

Infrared radiation is not visible, but can be felt as heat.

Ultraviolet radiation An invisible form of energy with wavelengths that are shorter than violet light.

wavelength Longer wavelength = lower energy Shorter wavelength = higher energy

scattering Process in which dust particles and gases in the atmosphere reflect light in all directions

Greenhouse effect A glass greenhouse is pictured to the right. The glass allows sunlight to go in. The sun’s energy gets trapped in the glass, keeping the room warm. What does the glass represent in our Earth?

Greenhouse effect The process by which gases hold heat in the air.

Warm Up – Does a plastic bag trap heat? Predict: Does a plastic bag trap heat? Materials: two thermometers, plastic bag What are the constants? What are the variables? Observe what happens. Conclusion:

Energy from the Sun The energy that comes from the sun comes in the form of radiation. Most of the energy from the sun travels to Earth in the form of visible light.

Energy from the Sun Most of the energy from the sun travels in the form of visible light. When using a prism, we can see each of the different wavelengths of light.

Energy in the Atmosphere Why is the sky blue? Other visible light hits Earth, but blue light is scattered when it hits molecules in the atmosphere

Energy in the Atmosphere However…the sky is not always blue! It changes color during sunset (or sunrise). This is because from our perspective, there is more atmosphere for the light to get through

Energy in the Atmosphere Some sunlight is absorbed or reflected by the atmosphere before it can reach the surface. The rest passes through the atmosphere to the surface.

Energy at Earth’s Surface Most of the energy is radiated back into the atmosphere and into space.

Energy at Earth’s Surface When Earth’s surface is heated, it radiates most of the energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation.
