EL VOCABULARIO
STEP ONE: VOCABULARY On your notes sheet you have a list of vocabulary. You have 1 minute to fill in all the words you know, and another 2 minutes to use a dictionary to fill in the words you don’t know. These words may or may not be used as a vocabulary quiz. Mrs. Mefford will direct you as to what to study when a vocabulary quiz comes up.

STEP 2: Thinking about the context- ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS We will then have a conversation (in spanish) and respond to three questions that will help us to think about the context and theme overall. Answer in spanish to the best of your ability level. No one in class is expecting perfect spanish in order to answer, so just get your words out there. Remember, the first step to fluency is TALKING, SPEAKING, BEING BRAVE, even when you don’t know all the right things to say. English will be used very sparingly to create bridges to ideas that are unclear. You will conclude the conversation by writing your own responses on your notes sheet. Write as much as you can in Spanish.

STEP 3: Reading and Activities You will be put into pairs. Work together to get through the activities. Use all your resources (dictionaries, online translators, etc. ) as a reference. After each reading, there will be questions you must answer in your writing section. The answers to these questions must be kept in your writing section for a grade on a later date. These questions might also be used as a comprehension quiz. Mrs. Mefford will direct you when it will be considered a quiz grade. It is important you understand the big picture of the text, even if you don’t understand every word.

HABLA: LECCIONES IMPORTANTES Piensa en una actividad o experiencia extraescolar en la que hayas aprendido lecciones importantes, bien sea en un club, un trabajo, una excursión, o en algún otro lugar o situación. Conversa con una compañero/a sobre estas dos preguntas: 1. ¿Qué aprendiste? 2. ¿Cómo han influido en tu vida esas lecciones?

STEP 5: ASSIGNMENTS (EITHER HOMEWORK OR IN-CLASS) You are expected to turn assignments in on-time and completed. Being a higher level class, I have higher expectations of you and your work. I don’t expect perfection but I do expect you to work hard and complete your work. Late work policy has been explained already to you. There are three levels of classes in this room. All assignments will vary according to skill level. You must complete your assignment at the level you have enrolled in. Sometimes the IB 1 and Spanish 4 class instructions will be combined, other times they will not.

PRACTICA: LA EDUCACIÓN ¿Qué palabras vienen a tu mente cuando piensas en la educación? En grupos de tres, escriban en un organizador gráfico los conceptos que les inspire el término “educación. ” Luego compartan sus gráficos con los demás grupos y complétenlos con los nuevos conceptos que motiva la conversación. HABLA: ¿ESTÁN DE ACUERDO? 1. La educación es el factor más determinante en el desarrollo de un individuo. 2. Cuando todos disponemos de acceso libre a la educación, tenemos las mismas oportunidades para desarrollar nuestras capacidades. 3. Los hijos de una familia pobre tienen mayor dificultad para conseguir una buena educación. 4. Mientras más sube el precio de la educación universitaria, más aumenta la desigualdad entre ricos y pobres. 5. Una persona dispuesta a esforzarse mucho puede conseguir una buena educación en cualquier país que ofrezca educación gratuita.

TAREA 4: DOS NACIONES Elabora un par de listas de las dificultades que existen en los sistemas educativos de México y Estados Unidos. Luego compara tus listas con las de un compañero y discutan estas preguntas: 1. ¿Cuáles son las dificultades educativas que tienen en común los dos países? 2. ¿Cuáles dificultades educativas son diferentes? 3. ¿Por qué creen que se presentan esas dificultades en cada uno de los dos países? 4. ¿Cómo se reflejan estos problemas en tu escuela o en otra escuela de tu comunidad?
TAREA 5 : UN MENSAJE ELECTRÓNICO- La Educación Recibiste un mensaje electrónico de una compañera de clase que ha decidido abandonar sus estudios para trabajar tiempo completo. Ella explica que su familia necesita dinero y que, aunque no quiere dejar de estudiar, necesita hacerlo para ayudarla.

TAREA 6: UN MENSAJE ELECTRÓNICO- Nuestra Sistema Educativa Recibiste un mensaje electrónico del presidente del sistema educativo de Salt Lake. El presidente quiere oír ideas que presentan soluciones a los desafíos en nuestro sistema.

Trata de impresionar al presidente con un mensaje claro y convincente. SP 4 / IB En parejas, elaboren una tabla como la siguiente. En la primera columna escriban cinco desafíos o problemas educativos. En la segunda, escriban una solución posible, y en la tercera, un beneficio de la solución. STEP 5: Oral Presentations You will be required to give information to the class (according to your skill level or your test requirement in the case of the AP students) in an oral presentation format. You can come prepared with notecards on some occasions, but on other occasions it will be impromptu during class. The only thing you need to worry about is saying what you know. Once again, I’m not expecting perfection, I’m expecting practice and participation.
