SURVEY • A survey lets you get a high-level understanding of the book • A good survey can take about 1 week • How to do a survey • Read the book • Read 1 -3 times • In a single sitting if possible • • • Outline the book Study historical context List themes List key words Determine key thought Read the book again if time allows

CHAPTER BY CHAPTER STUDY • Study each chapter in turn by breaking it into passages and then breaking the passages into verses • How to do a chapter by chapter study • Select and read a passage • Describe the passage • Verse by verse study • Read each verse and make notes under the following headings • Observations • Questions and answers • Cross-References • Notes and comments • Write a description of the passage • Repeat until you have completed the chapter • Write down theme, conclusions, and a description/title of the chapter • Consider creating a chart of the chapter • Apply
