Bible Study Methods Why Study the Bible?
Get Into groups of three or four! As a group, try to come up with five things you have heard people say about Christianity that are simply not true and write these on a sheet of paper. Try to answer these statements – how should Christians respond? What is the truth?
Next: These are some that I have heard… see if you can respond to them! Use your group!
1. The God of the Old Testament is different than the God of the New Testament: in the Old Testament, He is hateful and spiteful. The God in the New Testament is absent and detached – He doesn’t care about us, either way.
2. Christians hate gays. They can’t stand that someone might be different from them, and that makes them afraid. Christians are the most intolerant people around.
3. God can’t exist, because if he did, he would not allow bad things to happen. Even if God did exist, bad things still happen, so God cant be all that powerful; or worse, he made the bad things happen in the first place, so he can’t be good.
4. Religion is the root of all evil. More people have been killed because of religion than any other reason. Christianity is no different than Islam in that regard.
5. Christians have no understanding of science at all – what they say is just scientifically impossible. They are old fashioned, clinging to their Bible which is so full of errors it isn’t trustworthy for anything anymore.
6. The Bible is full of inaccuracies and contradictions. It says we’re supposed to “love each other, ” but it also says a father has the ability to beat or stone his wife or daughter if she doesn’t do what he wants.
7. You don’t have to know anything to testify for Christ. The Holy Spirit will give you the words to say when you need them!
The Big Problem: Prove it.
Why do we study? Imagine you were confronted with one of the previous statements. Why is it so important for you to know the answers, or at least have a good idea where to start?
