What’s the problem • Catch 22: – Can’t get AFI/SAFIs for new BGP features until get RFC – IDR won’t approve drafts without some implementation experience • Need Temporary AFI/SAFI for new features • Must be able to time-out the features • Part of bigger policy problem – Policy is not the point of the draft

Draft Mechanisms + comment • 3 mechanisms – Allocation and reclaiming of afi/safi numbers – Open Negotiations – Capability negotiation

Allocation of Numbers AFIs • Allocate temporary space at top of range – within AFI range at top – Within SAFI range at top – With an allocation re-use ID incremented each time allocation space cycles SAFIs Temp space Normal Space • IANA hands out space with: – 1 year lease for groups getting draft approved by IDR – If not approved in 1 year, number reused – If approved, the number kept on until official. AFI SAFI Allocation Reuse ID

Transition to Final Allocation • Open capability exchange – Error code of Open • Temporary AFI/SAFI , will not accept • Temporary AFI/SAFI use official number (value) • Dynamic capability – Return error code of • Temporary afi/safi – will not accept • Temporary afi/safi use official number NOTIFICATION Dyn cap
