What is a refugee? ★ Someone who has left their home and country because they fear for their life or safety or that of their family. ★ They are fleeing ○ War ○ Persecution ○ Natural disasters ○ Environmental crises ○ Poverty. Source information : figures at a glance
What is a refugee? ★ Many refugees leave suddenly and are able to take very few, if any possessions with them. ★ Sometimes they face many days of travel, with little food and in fear of their lives. ★ They become recognised as refugees with access to assistance from states and aid organisations. ★ They are protected by international law. ★ Refugees lose their home, families and communities and sense of purpose. Child refugees ★ Are particularly vulnerable. ★ Often become separated from their parents. ★ Are at risk of mistreatment. ★ Some are recruited to fight, abused or exploited and forced to work in dangerous environments. ★ Article 22 of UNCRC grants special protection to refugee children.
Child refugees ★ Like all children, child refugees are entitled to all the rights granted under the Article 22 of UNCRC, including: ○ Right to life ○ Adequate food ○ Adequate medical care ○ Education ○ Freedom from discrimination ○ Freedom from exploitation ○ Freedom from abuse
What is an asylum seeker? ★ Someone who claims to be a refugee but whose claim hasn’t been evaluated. ★ They would have applied for refugee status (but don’t have it yet) on the grounds that returning to their country would lead to persecution on account of race, religion, nationality or political beliefs. ★ So, not every asylum seeker will be recognised as a refugee, but every refugee was initially an asylum seeker. What is a migrant? ★ Someone who chooses to move, not because of a direct threat or persecution but mainly to improve their lives: ○ Finding work ○ Seeking better education ○ Reuniting with family ★ Unlike refugees, who cannot safely return home, migrants can return home if they wish. ★ This distinction is important for governments, since countries handle migrants under their own immigration laws and processes.
What about internally displaced people? ★ Internally displaced people have been forcibly removed from their homes. ★ This could be due to armed conflict, generalized violence or human rights violations. ★ They are different from refugees and asylum seekers as they have NOT crossed an international border. ★ They remain under the protection of their government, even if that government is the reason for their displacement. ★ This is an example of involuntary migration.
