BGE Science Body Defence Lesson 3 What our body does for us and what we can do for our body.
Please view this presentation in ‘present’ mode. Starter This picture shows a teenager in bed with a cold. What do you think she doing right? What do you think she doing wrong? 3 mins
Starter - possible answers This picture shows a teenager in bed with a cold. What is she doing right? ★ Sneezing or wiping her nose with a tissue to prevent the virus travelling through the air What is she doing wrong? ★ Leaving the tissues lying around, the virus could be on the tissues and passed on to whoever touches them, IF they then touch their face
Learning Intentions for this lesson • Barriers the body has to protect the itself from disease • What individuals can do reduce the spread of infection
Success Criteria ✔I can describe a first line defence barrier ✔I can name 3 first line defence barriers ✔I can explain why first line defence barriers are important ✔I can describe 4 things individuals can do to prevent the spread of infection
Key Words Defence barrier Skin Tears Mucus Acid Microbes Vaccinated
First line of defence Images from e-bug. eu Senior Schools-Immunity Our Skin ★ Is a barrier (unless it is cut or damaged) and stops microbes entering the body
First line of defence Images from e-bug. eu Senior Schools-Immunity Tears ★ Tears contain chemicals called enzymes which can break down some microbes on the surface of the eye. ★ Tears act like a barrier on the surface of the eye and can flush microbes away.
First line of defence Images from e-bug. eu Senior Schools-Immunity Mucus in the nose and windpipe ★ Mucus acts like a barrier and tiny hairs in the nose stop microbes entering our lungs. ★ We can sneeze or cough these harmful microbes away from our body. ★ We can swallow the mucus so it ends up in our stomach.
First line of defence Images from e-bug. eu Senior Schools-Immunity Stomach Acid ★ Stomach acid acts as a chemical barrier. ★ It is strong enough to kill any microbes that have been caught in mucus. ★ It can also kill any microbes that are swallowed or consumed in food or water.
First line of defence Images from e-bug. eu Senior Schools-Immunity Why are all these barriers so important? They all prevent the entry of microbes into our bloodstream
First line of defence Either: 27 mins ★Write or ★Draw or ★Make a short film To show and describe the 4 first lines of defence AND why they are so important.
How to prevent the spread of infection? Can you think of 6 ways?
How to prevent the spread of infection? ★Wash hands after using the toilet ★Wash hands before preparing a meal ★Keep surfaces clean, especially in kitchens and bathrooms ★Get vaccinated (more on this in later lessons) ★Use condoms to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections ★Isolate infected people so they cannot pass the infection on

#ISurvived. Ebola There is a video clip on the next slide, showing the story of Isatu Kanu, in Sierra Leone, who survived the Ebola virus. As you watch the film, think about the following things: What did Isatu do to 1. help prevent the spread of infection? 2. survive Ebola? How many Global Goals can you spot in the film? Which Global Goals are relevant to Isatu’s story? You can watch the film as many times as you want.
