Learning Intentions for this lesson • How do viruses survive? • How do viruses spread? • How do viruses make more copies of themselves? • Types of viruses • Human diseases caused by viruses
Success Criteria ✔I can describe how viruses can survive ✔I can describe 3 different ways that viruses can be spread ✔I can make a diagram or write the steps to show viruses can make more copies of themselves ✔I can state the names of 3 diseases caused by viruses ✔I can create a profile for a virus
Key Words Genetic material DNA RNA Parasite Infected Replicate Protein Mutation Dormant Transmission
What characteristics do living things have? ★ Remember MRS GREN? ?
What characteristics do living things have? ★Movement ★ Respiration ★ Sensitivity ★ Growth ★ Reproduction ★ Excretion ★ Nutrition

Are viruses alive? ★Viruses are strange things that are somehow in between being alive and not alive. ★If they're floating around in the air or sitting on a doorknob, they do absolutely nothing. ★They're about as alive as a rock!
Are viruses alive? ★But…. if viruses come into contact with a suitable plant or animal cell, they spring into action. ★They infect and take over the cell, like pirates hijacking a ship. ★As a virus cannot replicate (make more of themselves) without using another creature’s cells ‘machinery’, most people agree that they are not living. ★They are classed as parasites.
Are viruses alive? ★Living cells contain genetic material. ★It can be DNA or RNA. ★Viruses also contain genetic material and it can be DNA or RNA. ★The genetic material of a virus can change or mutate, which alters the characteristics of the virus.

How do viruses survive? ★Outside of their host cell, viruses can lie dormant (inactive). ★Example: the herpes simplex virus (HSV) can stay hidden (or dormant) in neurons (the cells in our nervous system) for our entire lives without causing any symptoms. ★During dormancy, the virus is inactive and does not affect our cells.
How do viruses survive? ★Different viruses can survive for different lengths of time. Example: ★Cold and flu virus-laden droplets may remain infectious for several hours, depending on where they fall.

How do viruses spread? The spread of viruses from one host cell to another host cell is often called transmission. There are several ways that viruses can spread: ★Sneezing → air ★Coughing → air ★Kissing → saliva ★Sexual contact → body fluids ★Sharing equipment e. g. needles → body fluids
How do viruses get into a new host cell? ★Air → breathed in – will enter nose, mouth, lungs ★Saliva → swallowed - will enter stomach ★Body fluids → can enter blood

Virus Replication ★ Viruses do not reproduce by cell division because they are NOT living. ★ Instead they use the host cell machinery (like pirates taking over a ship) to produce new copies of themselves. ★ This is called replication ★ These new viral particles burst out of the cell, killing the host cell. ★ Each new virus can attack a new host cell.
Virus Replication
Virus Replication Use the information to label the diagram or write out the steps on Worksheet 2. 7 mins
Diseases caused by Viruses All of these diseases are caused by different viruses attacking different host cells.

Viral Profile Carry out some research into ONE virus and the disease it causes and then create a Viral Profile. You could choose a disease from below.
Viral Profile Success Criteria: 24 mins ★The name of the virus ★Image of the virus* ★The name of the disease caused by the virus ★The effect the virus has on people’s health ★How the virus is passed from person to person You can use the template on Worksheet 2 or create your own. *For good digital citizenship you can filter google searches for Creative Commons images.
