SST’s are not a GATEWAY to SPED • We need to get out of the idea that when a student is struggling they should be tested for SPED. • Many SPED students are being moved from SPED only classes and mainstreamed into GEN ED classes. • Perception that SPED will solve everything for a struggling student.
SST and 504 Meetings • SST Meetings (Student Study Team) • Examine a student’s academic, behavioral, and social-emotional progress • Counselor, all students teachers, administrator, student, and parent/guardian • Main focus on prevention and intervention for maximizing student potential • 504 Meetings (Legal Document) • 504 - plan is monitored by teachers • 504 – Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination based on disability • 504 – civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities be met as adequately as needs of non-disabled students
Pre-Referral Intervention Manual • Can be used to research suggestions on how to deal with student issues. • Department leads have a copy • Copy in library • Talk to your colleagues
Pre-Referral Intervention Manual Activity • Break up into groups of 3 • Read the case study • Identify two or three main issues • Look for section in manual • List 4 interventions that might be used
