Selection Process • • § Scholarship eligibility (GPA – 3. 60 – not rounded up) (Must maintain until graduation) Faculty ratings § rated on leadership, service, & character § as they have known them as a teacher, club advisor, in the halls, through extra-curricular activities, through community activities § Confidential and cannot be shared with students or parents § Not based on hearsay or rumor Faculty Council Votes
Selection Process (con’t) • • ALL applications due March 13 th – 3: 30 pm Notification of acceptance April 3 rd Membership contract Induction – – – Rehearsal – April 17 th at 3: 30 Ceremony – April 19 th at 3: 00 An inductee is not a member until after the induction ceremony
Non-Selection • Re-application – Current Sophomores and Juniors can reapply next year if they maintain the GPA requirement. “Selection to National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership in the National Honor Society; instead they provide information to be used by the Faculty Council to support their candidacy for membership” (23 NHS Handbook).
Senior Re-Applications • • Committee looks for growth from previous year Use your old application to see where you may show improvement (service or leadership)
Leadership • Elected or appointed. . . Directly responsible for directing and/or motivating others § § § § Captain of a team Role in a club in or out of school Event coordinators Tutoring/mentoring Manager or trainer at work Troop leader Section leader in band or choir
Service • • Activities without any compensation School clubs (Key, Environmental, Student Government) Other examples: Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, 4 -H, Youth Group or Missionary Work Supervisor’s signature (if not able to get a signature due to proximity, attach an email from supervisor)
Character • • Character in school is verified with the entire faculty including administration Ratings from teachers include in and out of school activities (classroom, sports, clubs, etc. )
Other Information (Work, Recognition, and/or Awards) • • • NOT one of the 4 criteria for selection Including this on the application is meant to enhance (NOT REPLACE) one of the 4 criteria Include items that you would like the committee to know about you § § Academic Achievement Work hours and awards Eagle Scout Church/Youth Group membership
After Acceptance…. • Members must maintain GPA and Character expectations. If these requirements are not met, members may be dismissed. • Students are expected to attend meetings that are held once a month during the second half of lunch. Meetings are usually the last Thursday of every month.
After Acceptance…. • Students need to be responsible for completing their service requirements: 100 points per year. Points can be earned in a variety of ways (participating in drives and/or volunteering time). Points will be updated each month and available at meetings. It is the child’s responsibility to also keep track. They will receive a point tracking sheet at their first meeting. If the point requirement is not met by the end of the year deadline, a member may be dismissed and not receive their cord.
