Benchmark Running Records in HISD • Benchmark Running Records have been developed to serve as an objective tool to assess readers. Why collect data digitally? • Teachers are able to review, monitor and share data at the campus and district levels. • District and school leaders will be able to review student, teacher and campus data to support the end-of-year goal setting process. • Teachers, school leaders and district leaders are able to monitor student growth as a reader over time. 3

Steps for entering Benchmark Running Records on Ed. Plan Save and “x” out to exit Login to Ed. Plan Step 1. Access the system Student Tracking Step 2. Go to Student Tracking Choose a student Select Program Tracking Step 3. Select a student to input data Step 4. Select Program Tracking, choose Add Tracking Rubric, and enter BRR information Save and move on to the next student in Student Tracking Step 4. Save that student’s data then move on to the next student Run Reports Step 5. Run Reports

• Why does the fluency drop-down box not go below 20 words per minute? – Assessing a reader’s fluency rate is optional on all levels, and should never be addressed on levels Pre-A through C. When a reader calls less than 20 words per minute, the text is too difficult and should be adjusted. 9

FAQ • Why does the accuracy drop-down box only show 95 – 100% accuracy as choices? – Benchmark running records are given three times a year and are designed to determine a reader’s independent reading level. An independent accuracy rate is considered no less than 95 percent. 10

FAQ • Why do we determine a reader’s independent level rather than instructional? – Benchmark running records are very different than informal progress monitoring running records. • Benchmarks are given three times a year and are used as a predictor of a reader’s performance on high stakes tests (tests taken independently). They are also used to make important instructional decisions based on data. -continued… 11
