The 1950 s ● In the early 1950 s, the end of the Second World War was still at the forefront of the American consciousness ● We had young soldiers that were still re-adjusting to life stateside after being involved in one of the biggest wars to date ● We also had those that were too young to be drafted that had dodged being in WWII ● They were part of a new era and family structure-- the Nuclear Family
The Nuclear Family ● The Nuclear Family was made up of: ○ ○ ○ One Mom One Dad 2 (or 3) Children ● These were the “perfect” families that we might think about when we think of the 1950 s ● Usually, in these families, there is always an older “teenager” type ● Can anyone describe the 1950 s teenager?
The Teenager ● The 1950 s teenager has less responsibility than the teenagers of the past ● They do not have to participate in gruesome wars or grow up too fast ● Instead, they now live under their parents’ rule until they are older ● This also means that they get to use their parents’ income ● They have allowances, friends, and places to be ● Does anyone know popular activities for the 1950 s teen?
The Teenager ● We now have dating in the 1950 s! ● Going out with friends and friend groups were extremely popular ● Teenagers were discovering their boundaries and what it meant to be a teenager ● Adults tried to enforce what they believed to be the ideal teen through educational movies ● These were played at schools ● https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Cf.
