BELLWORK Give me a brief timeline of Catcher
BELLWORK Give me a brief timeline of Catcher in the way that you remember it.
PLANNER: Tonight’s Homework ● I want you to give me a timeline or outline of your own story: the introduction to conflict, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution
The Structure of Plot
Plot ● Plot is the events that occur that make up a story ● In this structure, there are specific elements that must be present to make a successful story ● These elements are: ● Introduction ● Rising Action ● Climax ● Falling Action ● Resolution
Introduction ● The introduction is also known as the exposition ● This part of the plot sets up the rest of the story ● The introduction gives us context as to where we are being dropped into in a character’s life ● It gives us background and set up for what might be happening next ● What is the exposition in Catcher ?
Rising Action This is where true conflict in a story is given to the reader It usually happens when the story is still in its early stages It is not always immediately seen, although it can feel implied This is where tension is built There might be some pushback from a character against conflict, but it is not the main battle or fight of conflict ● Where is the rising action in Catcher ? ● ● ●
Climax ● This is where the story reaches its boiling point ● Here, we have the main conflict come into play and become the main battle a character has to fight in that moment ● This is where the story really has a true turnaround and major change ● Can we think of examples of the climax of a story? ● Is there really a climax in Catcher ? What do you think it is?
Falling Action ● ● ● Events in falling action will help settle events from the climax It will calm the tension and help final resolutions fall into place Things will start to come together in falling action We will begin to see results of past choices of characters Is there falling action in Catcher ?
Resolution In the resolution, the story is wrapped up in a nice way All questions are answered The final outcomes of choices are explained There is either a happy or sad ending depending on the choice of the author ● What is the resolution of Catcher ? ● ●
Other Questions ● Does a full plot arch have to happen in one book? ● Do you think Catcher follows a perfect plot arch? ● Do you think every story has to follow a perfect plot arch in order to be interesting?
Tonight ● Plan out a story with a perfect plot arch ● Label each category: Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution ● Don’t write me the story- just write me the outline ● Feel free to extend your symbol story from last week and plan it out
