Bellwork 830 Put phone up Week 828 91
Bellwork: 8/30 Put phone up Week 8/28 -9/1 1. What is wrong with the graph to the right? 2. These 2 points lie on your best fit line: (14, 60) & (22, 85). Write the equation of the best fit line (b=50).
Objective • Learn how to write conclusion & reflection • Discuss challenge project & begin design
Today: 1. Part VI Notes 2. Discuss Challenge Project 3. Start project design
Materials • Unit Book • Challenge Project
Homework • None
Unit I: Nature of Science
Part VI: Conclusion
Conclusion • Conclusion: the summary and interpretation of experimental results at the end of a lab write up
Purpose • Experiments are only meaningful if you can interpret data & convey its meaning to your audience in a clear and concise manner
Conclusion • Conclusion should contain 4 components: • State CLAIMS • Use NUMERICAL EVIDENCE to justify the claims • RESTATE HYPOTHESIS – reject or accept based on evidence • MAKE INFERENCES using prior knowledge • Tell what data means
Observation vs. Inference • Observation – description of natural structures and processes • Can involve 5 senses – seen, tasted, heard, touched, or smelled • Measurements taken with scientific tools (p. H meter, thermometer, balance, etc. ) • Inferences – conclusions based on observations • Goes beyond what is directly sensed or measured • Provides meaning to the observation based on prior knowledge
Example of Inferences • Examine the picture to the right • Write: • Observations – what you detected with your 5 senses • Inferences – your interpretation of that observation
Reflection • After you write your conclusion…write a reflection • Reflection includes… • Identification of possible errors committed during the lab • How errors affect results • How the lab is related to biological concepts taught in class • Should be a minimum of 4 -5 sentences
Challenge Project
Challenge Project • Assign Project – August • Design Experiment – August 31 st th • Set up experiment – September 4 th • Experiment & Lab Notebook – September 5 • Formal Lab Report Due • Poster Presentations th 30
• Choose your group • Choose your topic • If you choose something that is NOT listed, I need to approve it • Every group needs to do research about their scientific question to determine variables…write down websites used • Phones are allowed today…for research only… • Start filling out design paper…#1, 2, & variables for 3 (do NOT write procedures) & then get initialed by me!!!
