Part III: Modern Evidence
Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria
Bacterial Resistance • Bacteria are exposed to an antibiotic • But NOT all are killed • Survivors are the fittest • When this is widespread, the antibiotic no longer kills that bacteria
Why has there been an increase in bacterial resistance?
Pharmaceuticals in Water Supply 1. Improper Disposal • Thrown away or flushed down the toilet 2. Not all medication is absorbed through the body, any extra is excreted & flushed away 3. Discarded drugs end up at landfills which pose a threat to our groundwater **Pharmaceuticals are not filtered out at water treatment facilities**
Pharmaceuticals in Water Supply • Antibiotics in our water supply = great danger • Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the water EXCEPT for the drug resistant bacteria • The resistant bacteria divide, multiply & dominate the environment • These can pose as a serious risk to aquatic, animal and human health
Pharmaceuticals in our Food • Livestock producers give antibiotics to animals to: • Make them grow faster • Help them survive crowded, unsanitary conditions • When overused, bacteria can become bacteria resistant & get into the food that we eat
What Can We Do to Help Avoid Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria? • Finish all of your antibiotics – even if you are feeling better!!! • Do not take antibiotics if you do NOT need them • Do not flush your unwanted antibiotics • Do not throw antibiotics in the trash • Dispose of your unwanted or extra antibiotics properly • Pima County Dispose-A-Med • Your local pharmacy
Sexual Selection
DNA Evidence of Evolution
More Modern Evidence • DNA • Compare DNA or proteins from different species • More similar means closely related • Less similar means distantly related
Evolutionary Trees • Closely related species are closer together
Can Be Based on Similarity In: • Skeletons • Digestive System Structure • DNA, RNA or Proteins
