Bellringer- BR- Who do you think this ad is “targeting? ” Explain how you know.
TARGET MARKET • In any ad, the advertiser focuses on a specific group of people called the target market. • A target market is made up of the people who might use or buy a certain product or service. • For example, the target market for dog food would be people who own a dog. • An advertiser’s job is to convince people who MIGHT need the product that they DO need it.
TARGET MARKET To determine target market, ask yourself some questions: 1. Who might use the product? 2. Who might actually buy the product? The two groups (user & buyer) aren’t always the same. Can you think of an example?
TARGET MARKET More questions to ask when determining target market: 1. Who will use the product, and who will buy it? 2. What people are shown using the product? Age? Gender? 3. What other pictures are in the ad? Who would be interested in these types of pics? 4. Does the ad address certain people? Does it use language that would appeal to a particular group?

GENERALIZATIONS • A generalization is a statement that applies to many different individuals or situations. • To form a generalization, combine what you know with specific information that you read to make a judgment about the world in general. • What strategy could we use to make a generalization?
GENERALIZATIONS • Generalizations are oftentimes faulty, meaning not always true. • They are similar to stereotypes. What’s a stereotype? • • Example of a generalization: “Old people can’t drive. ” Is this ALWAYS true of ALL old people? If it’s not always true, it’s a faulty generalization.
GENERALIZATIONS • Advertisers can lead you to make generalizations about the people who use the product, or about the product itself. • Usually, the generalizations are not obvious, so you have to study the ad to catch the “hidden message. ” • We are going to use the “It Says, I Say, and So” strategy to make inferences about the generalizations in ads.
Example of a generalization IT SAYS I SAY AND SO A newspaper says that the Mississippi River flooded several houses near its banks during recent heavy rains. I have a friend whose 1. My generalization is house was flooded when that rivers often flood it rained, and she lives houses near their by the Calumet River. banks during heavy rain. ----OR--2. Questions to ask yourself 1. What would really happen if you did or did not use this product or service? 2. Do the people in the ad represent everyone who uses this product? Or just some people? 3. Do the claims in the ad make sense?
