Today: Organic Macromolecules WEIRD WORDS? BREAK THEM DOWN! ORGANIC MONOMER = MACROMOLECULES = POLYMER =

Class, meet Molly Monomer. Yo!

In science, “poly” means MANY. Polymers are large molecules made up of many monomers

How many monomers does it take to make a polymer? Monomers Polymer

Monomers to Polymers

Polymer to Monomers

The 4 Main Types of Organic Macromolecules: 1. Carbohydrates 2. Proteins 3. Lipids 4. Nucleic Acids

1. CARBOHYDRATES!

1. CARBOHYDRATES MONOMER (Building Block): monosaccharide

1. CARBOHYDRATES What it Looks Like:

1. CARBOHYDRATES What it’s Used For: 1. Energy source

1. CARBOHYDRATES • Glucose • Glycogen • Starch Examples:

1. CARBOHYDRATES Memory Clue: Longest words go together! (Carbohydrate = Monosaccharide)

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING § What are the building blocks of carbohydrates? § What are carbohydrates used for? § When might you want to eat a lot of carbohydrates?

2. LIPIDS!

2. LIPIDS! Monomer (Building Block): fatty acid

2. LIPIDS! What it Looks Like:

2. LIPIDS! 1. What it’s Used For: Energy storage 2. Insulation

2. LIPIDS! • Fats • Oils • Waxes Examples:

2. LIPIDS! Memory Clue:

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING • What are lipids made of? • What are lipids used for? • • We use both carbohydrates and lipids for energy…what is the difference? A bear is hibernating in the winter for a few months. Will it use carbs or lipids for energy?

3. PROTEINS!

3. PROTEINS! Monomer (Building Block): amino acid

3. PROTEINS! What it Looks Like:

3. PROTEINS! What it’s Used For: 1. 2. Provides structure & support Speeds up chemical reactions

3. PROTEINS! Examples: 1. Enzymes 2. Elastin

3. PROTEINS! Memory Clue:

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING • What are proteins made of? • What are proteins used for?

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS!

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS! Monomer (Building Block): nucleotide

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS! What it Looks Like:

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS! What it’s Used For: 1. Heredity!

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS! Examples: 1. DNA 2. RNA

4. NUCLEIC ACIDS! Memory Clue: N with N (Nucleic acid; Nucleotide)

Check For Understanding What are nucleic acids made of? What are they used for?

Check For Understanding Which of the following are ORGANIC? Carbohydrates Protein Lipids Nucleic acids • Which of the following contain CARBON? Carbohydrates Protein Lipids Nucleic acids •

Guided Practice Time to break out our white boards! After I put up a statement on the whiteboard, please write one of the following letters on your board: C = carbohydrates L = lipids N = nucleic acids P = proteins
