Axis Aggression • In 1931 Emperor Hirohito decided to invade Manchuria (a province in China). • The Japanese army massacred thousands of Chinese people in a brutal attack in 1937. • Soon, Japan’s democracy collapsed and key military leaders set up their own cabinet to lead the government. • Hirohito was left powerless as the military began to invade countries throughout Asia.
Axis Aggression • In October of 1935 Italian forces invaded Ethiopia. • The League of nations “condemned” Italy for their aggression. • They put economic sanctions on the country, which made Mussolini angry. • Hitler offered to help Italy, and Mussolini quickly became friends with Hitler. • Italy refused to leave Ethiopia, and kept fighting in North Africa.
Axis Aggression • In 1936 Hitler decides to move German troops into the Rhineland. • The Treaty of Versailles specifically said that this area was to be a “de-militarized” zone (no country could station soldiers there). • Britain and France didn’t do anything because they were afraid of going to war with Germany. • In March 1938 he annexed Austria, and in September 1938 he annexed Sudetenland, which was the western border of Czechoslovakia.
