Scientific Notation Math’s Shorthand or text speak http: //www. shmoop. com/video/scientific-notation

Scientific Notation Chop the number so that it’s between 1 and 10. (that’s your coefficient) Count the number of spaces until you get to the end of the number-presto that’s the exponent! It’s always a number times a power of 10.

Ex 1 Scientific Notation to Standard form e Why did w two only need zeros while nt the expone was 4? ?

NEGATIVE POWERS MEAN DIVISION If you have a negative exponent it will be a very small number.

Ex 2 Scientific Notation to Standard form ?

Ex 3 Standard form to Scientific Notation 0. 000000467 Is this number greater than or less than 1? LESS! So the exponent is negative, we are dividing by a power of ten!

Ex 3 Standard form to Scientific Notation 0. 000000467

Ex 4 Standard form to Scientific Notation 3, 725, 000 ? Will the exponent be positive or negative?

Can we se e reasons why is it he lpful to write numb ers in different wa ys?
