Grammar Lesson: Noun Clauses A noun clause takes the place of a noun in a sentence. It is a subordinate clause that usually begins with that, whatever, why, whether, how, whom, whoever, or whomever. Like all subordinate clauses it contains a subject and a verb, but it cannot stand alone in a sentence. The noun clauses are boldfaced in these sentences: What Mr. Gatewood said was very thoughtful. Throughout Red Oak High School, people have noticed that being kind is very important. Notice that these noun clauses could not stand alone as a sentence. They could, however, be replaced by the pronoun it.
