Psychosis(Domains 1&2) Delusions � Fixed beliefs that are not amenable to evidence Hallucinations � Perceptions w/o actual stimulus
Disorganized Speech (3) Switch topics quickly Tangential responses May be incomprehensible if severe
Abnormal Motor Behavior (4) Many different manifestations Catatonic Behavior � Decrease in reactivity to environment � Rigidity � Refusal to respond to instructions � Lack of verbal/motor responses Agitated movements Repetitive movements
Negative Symptoms (5) Diminished emotional expression � Reductions in expression in face, eye contact, inontation, movement of hand/face. Avolition � Decrease in self-initiated, purposeful activities
What is schizophrenia? Symptoms from 2+ domains for 1 or more months Impaired function Disturbance lasts 6 months, some with residual symptoms Not depression/bipolar Associated with a history of Autism spectrum disorder
Risk/Causes Environmental � Higher rates in urban areas � Higher rats in season of birth Genetic/Physiological � Psychosis does NOT run in families � Alleles that are associated w/ ASD, and bipolar disorder also related to Schizophrenia � Birth complications related to schizophrenia in fetus
