The Rock Cycle

What is the difference between a rock & a mineral? Minerals are solid, inorganic, naturally occurring, and have a fixed crystalline structure made of one or more elements. A rock is a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals and organic matter.

The Value of Rocks Rock is an important natural resource. Rocks can be made into: Hammers Arrowheads Spear points Knives Scrapers Buildings Monuments Roads

How do we classify rocks? ? You decide!!! Create a Circle Map in your interactive notebook describing how you would classify rocks! Take a look at these pictures and the rocks in the lab!

Circle Map Create a circle map about how we classify ROCKS! 25 descriptive words HW if not completed in class

Bell Work 9/23/14 What do you know about ROCKS? ? ? I want 5 complete sentences about rocks… 1. Rocks are…. 2. Rocks are…. 3. Rocks are…. 4. Rocks are…. 5. Rocks are…. On your desk you should have: 1. PRIDE card 2. Interactive Notebook 3. Pencil/Pen

How do we classify rocks? ? Rocks are classified by their Formation, Composition, and Texture.

3 Types of Rocks… that’s it? ? Igneous Rocks Sedimentary Rocks Metamorphic Rocks Raise your hand if you recycle: Paper, plastic, aluminum… The Earth recycles too!!! One thing it recycles is ROCK!

Bell Work 9/25/14 On your desk: 1. PRIDE card 2. Interactive Notebook 3. Pencil/Pen 1. How are igneous rocks formed? Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock cools and solidifies. 2. How are sedimentary rocks formed? Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments settle out and are compacted together. 3. How are metamorphic rocks formed? Metamorphic rocks are formed when igneous/sedimentary rocks are changed by heat and pressure deep inside the Earth’s crust.

Bell Work 9/26/14 1. What is lithification? Compaction and cementation of sediment together 2. Which type of rock is formed through lithification? Sedimentary Rock 3. How is metamorphic rock formed? Heat and pressure change sedimentary/igneous rock into metamorphic rock. On your desk you should have: 1. PRIDE card 2. Interactive Notebook 3. Pencil/Pen

Rock Cycle Comic Strip Imagine you are a ROCK! Your task is to create a comic strip about the changes you go through as you progress from one form of rock to another. 8 box minimum **Summary of comic strip underneath! Make sure to include ever vocabulary term (and explain it) in your vocabulary list! Make sure to explain each process that goes into a rock changing form. Summary: _______________________________ _______________________________

Bell Work 9/29/14 1. Explain the difference between weathering and erosion. Weathering is the breakdown of rock into sediments by elements such as sunlight, water wind. Erosion is the transport of sediments from one place to another. 2. Describe how an intrusive igneous rock becomes a metamorphic rock. Intrusive rocks are changed into metamorphic rocks as they undergo heat and pressure. On your desk you should have: 1. PRIDE card 2. Interactive Notebook 3. Pencil/Pen

Next to the rock type above, write down the process needed to form each type Igneous- Crystalization Sedimentary- Lithification Metamorphic - Metamorphism On your desk you should have: 1. Igneous Rocks Where do Igneous rocks come from? ? ……VOLCANOES! Temperatures deep within the Earth are hot enough (14000 F to 23000 F) to melt rock

Igneous Rocks Intrusive igneous rock- Forms when magma cools within the Earth Extrusive igneous rock- Forms when lava cools on Earth’s surface

Textures of Igneous Rocks Texture = size of the rock’s mineral crystals Intrusive rocks commonly have large crystals Large crystals- slow cooling time Extrusive rocks commonly have small or no crystals Small/No crystals- fast cooling time

Textures of Igneous Rocks Large Crystals Small/No Crystals

Formed 1 km below Earth’s surface Ship Rock It was once intrusive igneous rock It is what’s left behind of magma that once fed a volcano Through weathering and erosion, surface rock has been worn away… …Ship Rock survives because igneous rock is usually harder than other types of rocks

Quick Quiz What causes igneous rocks to have different textures?

Sedimentary Rocks Form from sediments that undergo lithification (get compacted and cemented together into rock) Sediments- Can be pieces of rocks, minerals, plants, or animals

Sedimentary Rock Formation Rainwater washes away rock particles… Flow downhill to streams and rivers… Eventually these sediments reach the ocean… Settle on the bottom of the ocean… Pressure eventually forces these sediments together… Sedimentary rock is formed!

Types of Sedimentary Rock Clastic- Consists of fragments of previously existing rock. Organic- Consists of things that were once living. Coal- of remains of plants (dead wood, bark, leaves, etc. ) Limestone- ocean organisms (shells, bones, etc. ) Chemical- Formed from an inorganic process such as evaporation.

Metamorphic Rock Forms when heat or pressure cause older rocks to change into new types of rocks Metamorphism The process in which existing rock is changed by heat or pressure

Metamorphic Rock During metamorphism rocks undergo many changes Heat and pressure can break the bonds that join the atoms in minerals… the atoms then join together differently Recrystallization Rocks do not melt during this process!!!

Textures Foliation- An arrangement of minerals in flat or wavy parallel bands Nonfoiated Rocks Foliated Rocks Rock is made up of only one Develop under pressure type of mineral OR Minerals flatten out or Not under as much pressure line up in bands

Quick Quiz Foliated or Nonfoliated? ? Saglet Fiord, Canada

What type of rock is this? How do you know? ?
