Geographers refer to location in 2 ways. • Absolute location is an exact place on earth where a geographic feature such as a city is found

Relative location • Relative location describes a place in comparison to other places around it. • Examplethe relative location of Louisiana is south of Arkansas west of Mississippi east of Texas & north of the Gulf of Mexico

• Geographers use a grid system of imaginary lines for locating places on the earth’s surface

Equator • Imaginary line that divides the north and south halves

Prime Meridian • The imaginary line that divides the earth east and west • Sometimes this is called the Greenwich meridian because the line runs through Greenwich, England

Hemisphere • Each half of the globe is called a hemisphere. • Hemispheres can be north & south or east & west

Lines of Latitude • Imaginary lines that help locate places north & south. Latitude lines run parallel to the equator.

Lines of Longitude • Lines of Longitude mark positions in the east and west hemispheres. The prime meridian is the zero-degree for longitude.

Signing Latitude( a way to remember latitude) • Latitude: – “I'm climbing the Ladder of latitudes, latitudes. I'm climbing the ladder of latitudes, all around the world. ”

Remembering Longitude • Longitude: – “It's a LONG, LONG way from pole to pole, pole to pole It's a LONG, LONG way from pole to pole, so we call those LONGITUDES. ”

Finding an absolute location • To find an absolute location you use the grid system to find the point where the latitude and longitude lines cross.
