What is Health? Ø Health- The combination of your physical, mental/emotional, and social wellbeing. Ø
Health Triangle Ø Each side effects the other and they are all interconnected.
Physical Health Ø physical- the way your body parts and systems work together. Ø a. proper nutrition Ø b. regular physical activity Ø c. adequate sleep
Mental/Emotional Health Feelings about yourself, how well you relate to others, how well you meet the demands of daily life. Ø a. developing thinking skills Ø b. enjoy learning Ø c. see mistakes as opportunities to learn, grow, and change. Ø
Social Health Ø. social- the way you get along with others Ø a. ability to make and keep friends Ø b. seeking and lending support when necessary
Health Triangle Activity
Health Status Ø The sum total of positive and negative influences a person chooses. - All of the decisions that you make in your lifetime. * Behavior has the most influence in determining your health status!
Promoting Your Health Ø Many deaths can be prevented if people practice healthy habits Ø 1. Lifestyle Factors-personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives that help determine his/her level of health. Ø Ø Ø a. 7 -8 hrs. of sleep b. balanced diet c. refrain from smoking d. exercise at least 3 x’s a week e. no alcohol or drugs f. maintain recommended weight

Heredity Ø Heredity- all the traits and properties that are passed from parent to child.
Environment Ø Ø Ø Ø Environment- sum total of your surroundings-physical conditions in which you live. a. physical environment- things around you. 1. indoor 2. outdoor b. social environment- family and other people who you come in contact with daily. 1. peers- people who are the same age and have similar interests. 2. negative peer pressure- peers who take part in dangerous, unhealthy or illegal behavior. c. cultural environment- collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. 1. gives you a sense of identity in a multicultural world 2. religion 3. regions 4. friends
Behavior Ø -you have little control over your heredity and environment but: You have a great deal over your behavior!! Being able to take charge of your health is very important.

YOUR HEALTH TRIANGLE
Part One: Physical Health Ø For each statement that follows answer YES or No on your paper depending upon whether the statement is true for you. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
