Bell Ringer Get out yesterdays notes and answer
Bell Ringer • Get out yesterday’s notes and answer today’s Bell Ringer (on the back): What are Earth’s 4 spheres? Geosphere – Earth’s land Hydrosphere – Earth’s water Atmosphere – Earth’s air Biosphere – Earth’s living things • Turn in student info sheets to the front basket. • Don’t forget to sign up for Remind! • Absent yesterday? Come see me.
Scientific Method
Scientific Method • How do scientists solve problems? • Scientific Method – a planned, organized approach to solving problems • Step 1 – Identify the problem
Scientific Method • Step 2 – State a hypothesis • Hypothesis – a suggested explanation for an observation • The hypothesis must be testable (realistic and not an opinion)
Scientific Method • Step 3 – Test the hypothesis • Conduct an experiment, which tests only one variable at a time • Variable – a factor that can change in an experiment
Parts of an Experiment • Independent Variable – the factor the experimenter changes – The “main idea” of the experiment • Dependent Variable – a factor that changes when the independent variable is changed – What is being measured in the experiment
Scientific Method • Control group – group unaffected by the experiment, used to compare the test results – The group that is NOT getting the independent variable • Constants – factors that do not change during the experiment – Only one variable can be tested at a time, so all other parts of the experiment must remain constant
Scientific Method • Step 4 – Analyze the test results • Step 5 – Draw conclusions – Did your data support or reject your hypothesis?
Practice: • Shawna believes that classical music increases plant growth. All of the plants are kept in the same room and are given the same amount of sunlight and water. Group A plants are put near a radio that plays classical music, while Group B plants are on the opposite side of the room, far away from the music. Every day for a week, Shawna measures the plant growth. • What is the hypothesis? Classical music increases plant growth. • _________________

Reaction Time Lab • Work together testing your response time with different senses. Do not talk to other groups. • Each table needs ONE lab sheet and ONE ruler. Rulers are at Station 1. • When done, return ruler to Station 1. Turn in sheet to front metal basket. EACH PERSON needs a Scientific Method WS. This is individual work. Turn in when done.
Film Canister Lab • Read all directions and questions carefully. • Both people need to contribute. Communicate with each other, but not with other groups. If you have questions, call me over. • When done, turn in to the metal basket on the front table. • Each person needs to get a WS from the front and work on it. This is INDIVIDUAL WORK. Turn in or finish for HW.
