WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FLEXIBLE? ▪ We can let changes happen and not get upset. ▪ We can stay calm if plans change. ▪ We can “go with the flow!”
WHERE CAN WE BE FLEXIBLE? ▪ At school ▪ At home ▪ In the community ▪ With our friends
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE RIGID? ▪ Being rigid means that we get upset or frustrated when things change or when people don’t want to do what we want. ▪ When we are being rigid it is hard to change our thoughts or feelings.
TO BE FLEXIBLE, WE NEED TO REMEMBER… ▪ Life isn’t the same every day ▪ New things will happen ▪ We need to be able to handle changes in our schedule ▪ Stay calm, even when schedule changes occur
STRATEGIES FOR BEING FLEXIBLE ▪ Stop and think about the problem ▪ Is it a big problem or a little problem? ▪ Take deep breaths ▪ Count to ten ▪ Talk to a teacher or trusted adult
PRACTICE! -BEING FLEXIBLE▪ Your teacher says that there is a different schedule at school and you will need to do a different job today. What should you do? ▪ Cry ▪ Do the other job ▪ Get angry
PRACTICE! -BEING FLEXIBLE▪ Your teacher had to take a sick day at work. Now you need to go to a different classroom. What should you do? ▪ Get upset ▪ Go to the other classroom ▪ Refuse to leave the room
PRACTICE! -BEING FLEXIBLE▪ You forgot to bring your lunch to school today. What should you do? ▪ Yell, “I DON’T HAVE ANY FOOD!” ▪ Keep it to yourself ▪ Go to the cafeteria and buy a snack or lunch
PRACTICE! –BEING FLEXIBLE▪ The dishwasher is broken and you have to wash all of the dishes by hand. What should you do? ▪ Leave the dirty dishes in the dishwasher until the dishwasher is fixed. ▪ Wash the dishes by hand in the sink. ▪ Throw the dishes in the garbage.
