Being A Girl ROX! Overview of Ruling Our e. Xperiences Program for Girls
The mission of ROX is to equip girls to with the knowledge and skills necessary to live healthy, independent, productive, and violence-free lives.
It all started in 2006… Dr. Lisa Hinkelman was a full-time professor of counselor education at The Ohio State University. She began studying what was going on for girls, and how we could more effectively help, support, and empower them. She researched girls to find out what the big things going on in their lives and found that navigating friendships and relationships, dealing with girl bullying, experiencing drops in self-confidence and body image concerns, standing up for oneself, and dealing with pressure were issues many girls were experiencing ---- although most felt alone in their experiences. She developed ROX as a research study and started to identify the types of experiences girls needed to have to develop confidence, communication skills, healthier relationships, and stronger ambitions. The goal was for girls to develop skills to better navigate the challenges that they face during their growing up years. The data showed that the program was working! That the outcomes from the pre- and postmeasures demonstrated that girls were effectively developing new skills, competencies, and confidence by participating in ROX!
The research showed what worked • Gender-specific programming; • Small-group interventions provided by trained professional facilitators; • Opportunities for knowledge and skill acquisition; • Targeted interventions; • Age-appropriate content and interventions focusing on the developmental needs of girls.
