Bed Baths Soap and Water vs Disposable Wipes
Bed Baths: Soap and Water vs. Disposable Wipes Grace Jones, Peyton Romer & Tim Bolton Longwood University: NURS 230
Abstract Introduction: - Soap and water Disposable wipes - To determine which bed bath method is most: Cost effective, Efficient, and Patient Centered - Comparative study of traditional and disposable wipe bed baths using patients experience, nursing application, and a cost analysis - Cost efficiency supports disposable wet wipes Patients and Nurses prefer the soap and water bed bath - In specific circumstances the disposable wipes are the most cost effective, but the traditional bed bath method is preferred by nurses and patients Objectives: Methods: Evaluation Conclusion:
Introduction Provision of hygiene is a core nursing task (Groven et al. , 2017). Bed Bath Primary goals(Veje et al. , 2019): - Maintain hygiene Refresh and comfort patients Decrease odor and risk for infection Simulate circulation
Methods Compare the two techniques with the following criteria: ● Nursing workload and time ● Cost analysis ● Patient preference
Note. Data for bathing time, number of nurses, and parameters for traditional and disposable bed bath from Büyükyılmaz & Şendir (2017).
Table 1: Bathing Time, Numbers of Nurses, and Parameters for Traditional and Disposable Bed Bath Conclusions ● ● ● Illustrates the comparison of parameters between traditional bed baths and disposable wipes bed bath In all parameters the traditional soap and water bed bath application scored higher than the disposable wipes application Except for the “learning” parameter, all other parameters had a “statistically significant” difference between the two applications
Note. Data for cost analysis for traditional and disposable bed bath from Büyükyılmaz & Şendir (2017).
Table 2: Cost Analysis for Traditional and Disposable Bed Bath Conclusions ● ● Summarizes the costing of both traditional and disposable wipes bed-bath applications Analysis was based on 3 ICU units, where nurses perform a minimum of five bed baths per day Cost analysis showed that the traditional bed-bath method was about twice as expensive as the disposable bed-bath method The difference for a year equaled $83. 70
Patient Satisfaction Feedback ● ● ● Traditional bed baths gave patients the feeling like they had a real bath which makes them feel more comfortable Wipes give patients more of a sticky feeling left on their skin and do not provide comfort or relief Patients are more satisfied with the traditional bed bath rather than the wipes
Conclusion In conclusion, the application time, workload for nurses, and cost analysis favored the disposable wipes method. Nurses prefer the traditional bed bath over the disposable wipes because the traditional bed bath allowed them to communicate effectively with the patient. The traditional bed bath is also preferred because the patients report a feeling of comfort and cleanliness afterwards. Nurses should continue to implement and test the new ways to give bed baths and should remember that the patient’s needs come first.
