How do you read a story? -Normally you read a story from beginning to end. How do you read a “textbook? ” -A textbook should be read differently than any other type of book.
Becoming an Active Reader Step #1: Previewing n What’s that? -Previewing a chapter gives you an idea of what the chapter is about and what its organization is. • How? -Read the summary first or -Go through subheadings or -Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs.
Becoming an Active Reader Step #2: Ask Questions n How? -Turn subheadings into questions. -Subheadings are normally in bold print or italicized. Life in the United States becomes “What is life like in the United States? ”

Becoming an Active Reader Step #3: Take Notes n How? -Good readers write in their textbook or take notes in a separate notebook -Underline or highlight key points -Put question marks next to what you don’t understand -Circle key words
Becoming an Active Reader Step #4: Summarize n How? -After reading the paragraphs under each subheading, try to summarize in your own words what you’ve just read. -Tell a friend what you’ve just read. -Say it aloud. -Try writing down what you’ve just read.
