What is Diction? � The words a writer chooses to convey a particular meaning is his or her diction. When analyzing diction…. look for words and/or phrases that seem stronger than the others. DICTION IS NEVER THE ENTIRE SENTENCE!

What Other “Diction Clues” are There? � Look for a pattern in the words that a writer chooses Effective diction is shaped by words that are clear and concrete. Good writers avoid words like “pretty, ” “nice, ” and “bad. ” (Why? ) Example: A coat isn’t torn; it is tattered. A door doesn’t shut; it thuds.

What does Diction depend on? Diction depends on…. Subject- The subject (what the author is writing about) can influence the type of diction used. Occasion- Formal diction is reserved for scholarly writing and serious texts. Informal diction is often used in narrative essays. Audience- A writer needs to consider the “reader” when choosing diction. Purpose- Whether a text is meant to be persuasive, entertaining, informative, etc. partly determines diction. �

So Now What? When writing an essay in which you are analyzing diction avoid saying… “The writer uses diction…. ”(This is obvious!) � Instead… say: “The writer creates a _______diction through the use of …” OR “The language of the text is_______. “

Levels of Diction � High or Formal Diction � Creates an elevated tone � Free of slang, idioms, colloquialisms, and contractions � Contains polysyllabic words, sophisticated syntax, and elegant word choice

Levels of Diction Neutral- Uses standard language and vocabulary without elaborate words and may include contractions. Example: The shark swung over and the old man saw his eye was not alive and then he swung over once again, wrapping himself in two loops of the rope. The old man knew that he was dead but the shark would not accept it. Then, on his back, with his tail lashing and his jaws clicking, the shark plowed over the water as a speedboat does. ” �

Levels of Diction - Informal The language of everyday use � Relaxed and conversational � Includes common or simple words, idioms, slang, jargon and contractions Example: “Three quarts of milk. That’s what was in that icebox yesterday. Three whole quarts. Now they ain’t none. Not a drop. I don’t mind folks coming in and getting what they want, but three quarts of milk! What the devil does anybody need with three quarts of milk? ” �

So Now What? In your “notes” area for diction, create an area where you can create a “diction glossary. ” Create a list of words that you can use to describe diction. � Make sure that your list contains at least 5 words. High/Formal Neutral Informal �
