… because good research needs good data I: What Do Funders Expect? Analysis of the major UK research funders’ data-related policies (Jones, 2009). . . Major findings: • Not all funders have data policies • Some have different policies for different programs • Requirements are expressed in different ways • In a word, they’re diverse. . . http: //www. dcc. ac. uk/resources/policy-and-legal/overview-funders-data-policies 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
… because good research needs good data I: RCUK Common Principles on Data Policy • 7 principles agreed by all the UK research councils in May 2011 • Emphasises publicly funded data as a public good, which should be made openly available • Recognises that there are legal, ethical and commercial constraints on release of research data • Ensures that researchers get due recognition for their research, while protecting their IP • States that it is appropriate to use public funds to support the management and sharing of publicly-funded research data http: //www. rcuk. ac. uk/research/Pages/Data. Policy. aspx 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
… because good research needs good data I: Current Requirements • The RCUK funders AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, & STFC all require some form of data management or sharing plan as part of a funding application. • The requirements still vary widely, but they all have the RCUK Common Principles as their foundation. • Non-RCUK the Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK also require data management or sharing plans in their grant applications http: //www. dcc. ac. uk/resources/data-management-plans/funders-requirements 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
… because good research needs good data I: EPSRC • EPSRC does not require researchers to submit data management or sharing plans in grant applications. • However, they do require research organisations to publish appropriately structured metadata online describing the research data they hold, normally within 12 months of the data being generated. • It is expected that data will be made available in a timely and responsible manner. • The EPSRC expects data to be maintained securely for 10+ years • The deadline for institutions to meet this requirement is May 2015 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
… because good research needs good data II: DMP Online – What is it? A web-based tool that enables users to. . . • Create, store and update multiple versions of Data Management Plans across the research lifecycle • Meet a variety of specific data-related requirements (from funders, institutions, publishers, etc. ) using carefully designed templates • Get tailored guidance on best practice and helpful contacts, at the point of need • Customise exports of DMPs in a variety of formats • Share DMPs with others in order to facilitate communications within and beyond research projects • It is based on the DMP Checklist first created in 2009 and maintained and revised ever since * N. B. The templates have varying degrees of endorsement from funders, stakeholder communities, etc. 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
… because good research needs good data II: The DMP Checklist The checklist covers all of the following areas: 1: Introduction and Context 2: Data Types, Formats, Standards and Capture Methods 3: Ethics and Intellectual Property 4: Access, Data Sharing and Re-use 5: Short-Term Storage and Data Management 6: Deposit and Long-Term Preservation 7: Resourcing 8: Adherence and Review 9: Agreement/Ratification by Stakeholders 10: Annexes 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England

… because good research needs good data II: DMP Online V 3. 0 • Released in Spring 2012 • Improved user interface, inc. customisable institutional versions • New features: • Overlaying multiple templates for ‘hybrid’ DMPs • Template phases (e. g. pre- / during / post-project) • Granular read / write / share permissions • API for systems interoperability (e. g. this project) • Shibboleth authentication • Multilingual support / boilerplate text • Endorsement from funders 10 th Digital Curation Centre Regional Roadshow: Northeast England
