Introduction Themes Designs of the Year brings together projects from six categories to represent the year in design: Architecture, digital, fashion, graphics, product and transport. The following slides give more information on each category and features an example object to look out for in the exhibition. This exhibition is sponsored by Beazley Right: Harbin Opera house, China. Harbin Opera House is an extension of the Songhua River—a series of undulating lines that integrate the sinuous landscape into a formal building mass. THE DESIGN MUSEUM INDUCTION 2

architecture This category represents the fullest range of the built environment from small scale domestic to public parks. Better Shelter – IKEA foundation Designed by Johan Karlsson, Dennis Kanter, Christian Gustafsson, John van Leer and Tim de Haas, in partnership with IKEA Foundation and UNHCR Nominated by Daniel Charny and Bernard Mc. Coy First prototyped in 2013, the IKEA flat packed refugee housing. ‘Better Shelter’ are well insulated and up to two times bigger than traditional tents erected for refugees. So far the shelters, intended to last up to three years, have seen use in Iraq and Ethiopia. The shelter comes flat packed in a few boxes and takes around four hours to construct with no specialist tools needed. A solar panel on the roof provides power for lighting inside the shelter. digital A wide ranging category that includes projects that may touch on other categories but are included here because it is their digital dimension that makes them interesting. Open. Surgery Designed by Frank Kolkman with the Design Interactions department of the Royal College of Art, London, and the Kyoto Institute for Technology Nominated by Noam Toran Whilst trying to develop a cheap and accessable robot for use in developing countries Kolkman found himself reaching an intellectual copyright wall. He went ahead in creating a low cost machine with off the shelf materials and 3 D parts at the risk of severe legal action. Should design break the law for the good of others? fashion Everything from student graduation shows to established fashion houses, this category includes the most important collections, accessories, fashion shows, exhibitions, films, costumes and individual pieces. Kids vs Fashion Directed by Yolanda Dominguez Nominated by Alex Bec Artist Yolanda Dominguez explores fashion advertising through the eyes of eight year olds. She asks children to give their responses to the advertising campaigns that fashion houses have spent millions on. Common themes arise around women looking ill, scared or hungry and men looking like superheroes or in control of their environment. The technique is often referred to as ‘culture jamming; using a medium to subvert its own message. What are your thoughts on fashion advertising? THE DESIGN MUSEUM BEAZLEY DESIGNS OF THE YEAR 5

graphics 2 D work where graphic design is the key to the project’s success – this could be beautifully executed packaging, books, magazines, identities, digital, films, animation, street art, exhibition design, posters or typefaces. We Listen Designed by Mullen. Lowe, London, with photographs by Nadav Kander, for Network Rail and Samaritans Nominated by Wayne Hemingway The combination of copywriting, photography and graphic presentation, the campaign was funded by Network Rail and ran in stations across the UK. On average across the rail network there is a suicide every single day. Network Rail and the Samaritans sought to reach out through a striking advertising campaign. product This category includes furniture, unique and mass produced items including toys, packaging, lighting, technology, homewares and healthcare. A seemingly endless range of outstanding objects have been included in this category. LEGO® City Fun in the 133 Park – City People Pack Designed by Andrew Butler Coghill, Senior Designer, the LEGO Group Nominated by Daniel Charny The #toylikeme viral campaign, aimed at representing all abilities in toy lines, turned its attention to LEGO figures. The response from the Danish company was found in their ‘City People Pack’ in the form of a figure in a wheelchair. Why do you think that it’s important for young people to be able to identify themselves in the figures that they play with? THE DESIGN MUSEUM BEAZLEY DESIGNS OF THE YEAR 7

transport This category looks at more than planes, trains and automobiles (though, these are important too). Lumos bicycle helmet Designed by Eu-wen Ding and Jeff Haoran Chen Nominated by Paul Marchant Being seen is very important for anyone on the road. Letting other road users know what you are about to do is also vital. The Lumos bicycle helmet addresses this need for cyclists by allowing them to signify when they are breaking or about to turn a corner. Lumos ensures that cyclists have a similar level of visibility as other road users. What other designs would help cyclists to be safe on the road? THE DESIGN MUSEUM BEAZLEY DESIGNS OF THE YEAR 8
