Beaumont Middle School Distance Learning Orientation
Distance Learning is Going to be Different from NTI • What we learned from the spring NTI • Students needed more regular contact and instruction from their teachers • Many of our students struggled with unstructured, independent work time to complete their assignments at their own pace • There were certain things that needed to be consistent across the building, such as LMS being used by teachers • Assessing our student's skills is going to be very important because of the different experiences they had in the spring
What's Staying the Same • Students will still be placed on teams and have a group of teachers that work with the same students • Counselors will still be by grade level (6 th grade – Tipton, 7 th grade – Crawford, 8 th grade – Colegrove) • We will still have 6 classes per day and rotating electives will be on A/B day • We will have student newscast with announcements that will be posted on the BMS website
Daily Schedule ARRIVAL 8: 45 -9: 05 1 ST PERIOD 9: 05 -9: 55 BREAK 9: 55 -10: 00 2 ND PERIOD 10: 00 -10: 50 BREAK 10: 50 -11: 00 3 RD PERIOD 11: 00 -11: 50 LUNCH 11: 50 -1: 00 4 TH PERIOD 1: 00 -1: 50 BREAK 1: 50 -2: 00 5 TH PERIOD 2: 00 -2: 50 BREAK 2: 50 -3: 00 6 TH PERIOD 3: 00 -3: 50
Advantages of Our Schedule • Allows students to have contact with each teacher, each day • Creates structure that will make transition to in-person classes or back to distance learning easier on students • Allows for live instruction throughout the week and we will be able to cover all content for each course • Reduces the amount of unstructured, independent work time for students • Teachers will be able to record and post classes each day
Consistency in Learning Management System • All teachers will be using Canvas as their Learning Management System • This is the same system used by the University of Kentucky for distance learning • Canvas app allows parents to check student progress better than Google Classroom • Canvas app also allows better communication with teachers than Google Classroom • Canvas works better with Infinite Campus so there are no classroom codes like Google Classroom
What students will need each day? • Supply lists are on the Beaumont website and are broken down into what they need now and when we return to in-person class • A device of some sort (Chromebook, laptop, etc. ) • Internet access • Students will use Zoom to see and hear their teachers (links will be available on BMS website under NTI tab) • Students will use Canvas to access course materials (students access through Google waffle, teachers will be able to help them access)
Zoom Like a BMS Colt!!! • B: Be Respectful to the Speaker and One Another • Mute yourself when you are not speaking • Behave as if you were physically in your teacher's classroom. • Wait to be called on before you speak. You can use the raise hand feature or ask your questions in the chat. • M: Minimize Distractions • Choose a spot where you can focus on class. • Keep other electronics away during class. • S: Smile and Get Your Learn On • Camera On, Focus, Share, Participate, and Ask Questions!!!
