Beattie Park Disc Golf Course Proposal
Brief Disc Golf Overview Disc golf is a low impact outdoor sport similar to ball golf, but instead of using clubs to hit balls, discs (similar to Frisbees®) are selected for their flight profiles and thrown towards catching devices, known as baskets. The goal is to make it through the course in the fewest number of throws possible. This simple set up allows persons of all ages and abilities to enjoy disc golf. Elementary school age children can play disc golf right along with, “legends, ” or 70+ year old players with as little as a seven dollar disc and an enthusiasm for the sport. Disc Golf’s Near Future Disc golf is currently where ball golf was about 50 to 60 years ago. It’s in the grass root stage with a tremendous amount of growth happening. Technology in disc golf discs keeps increasing and the sport keeps growing. The most recent disc golf tournament was the Vibram Open at Maple Hill in Massachusetts. Over 2, 000 people came the watch the tournament, including over 800 to watch the leader card finish at hole 18.
Use of Land The course layout was designed with player and spectator safety first in mind and with course challenge second. This allows disc golfers to share the park with other park users while still keeping the course challenging. This front nine layout leaves the potential for a back nine to be put in up on the hill half of Beattie Park, giving Beattie Park 18 holes for competition play.
Tee Pads Tee pad construction will consist of a frame approximately four foot by nine foot constructed of 4 x 4 pressure treated wood, an underlayment of tamped sand a top layer of 36 square feet of concrete paving stones. Framed concrete paving stones will make tee pad construction easy, look nice in our park and has a low cost to install with minimum maintenance requirements. Tee signs will be incorporated into the tee pad for each hole. By incorporating the tee sign with the tee pad, costs will be reduced along with the problem of graffiti.
Baskets The baskets that will be installed are basic Discraft Chainstar Disc Golf Baskets. Basic means it can be mounted in the ground once and not moved to a new location which will greatly hinder theft of baskets. Basic Chainstar baskets are made of hot-dipped galvanized steel and do not have a large band on top, which many other baskets do, to rust or attract graffiti and are designed for optimal disc catching. To mount each basket will require 80 pounds of concrete.
