0. Intervention on SPS BA 5 p. CVD Diamond detector QIE 10 readout prototype Displacement. Detector was too close to interaction (1 m) point according to Fluka simulations BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 2
0. Intervention on SPS BA 5 p. CVD Diamond detector QIE 10 readout prototype Displacement. Old Location (1 m) New Location (3 m) Detector was too close to interaction (1 m) point according to Fluka simulations BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 3
0. Intervention on SPS BA 5 p. CVD Diamond detector QIE 10 readout prototype Displacement. A nasty surprise… During the scaffolding mounting/dismounting, someone step on the SMF fibres connector, breaking, not only the fibre connector, but also the E 2000 adapter on the box. Fortunately… I had to replace the fibre (for a longer one) and brought with me all the required tooling to replace the E 2000 adapter on the box. BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 4
0. Intervention on SPS BA 5 p. CVD Diamond detector QIE 10 readout prototype Displacement. Cables routed to new location, some patchcords added and detector displaced. No major issues found: Test on surface shown that QIE 10 Prototype is still alive Distance = 3 m Steve helped me a lot here…Many thanks!! BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 5
1. Set-Up: Preparations for p. CVD Diamond detector readout ASIC (ICECAL) • Objective: • • Check data capture with AD 41240 and ADC Performance Rad. Hard ADC 40 MSPS, 4 CH, 12 bits. Rad. Tol ADC Driver Used THS 5421 Both used for digitalization of ICECAL Output every 25 ns. BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 6
2. Some concepts: Frequently used on ADC Dynamic characterization • Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR): Ratio of the power of a signal and the power of the background noise. • Signal to Noise Ratio and Distortion (SINAD): Ratio of the power of a signal to the power of the background noise and first N harmonics • Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): Ratio of the power of harmonics of a signal and the signal power. • Spurious-Free Dynamic Range (SFDR): Ratio of the fundamental signal and the strongest spurious. • Effective Number of Bits (ENOB): Ratio of the fundamental signal and the strongest spurious. BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 7
3. Measurements on ICECAL_V 3 Board: Example with Fin=2. 5 MHz, Fs = 40 MHz, Vin = 1. 7 Vpp BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 8
3. Measurements on ICECAL_V 3 Board: Example with Fin=2. 5 MHz, Fs = 40 MHz, Vin = 1. 7 Vpp A Fast comparison with known information from AD 41240 : K. Kloukinas et al 2005. Characterization and production testing of a quad 12 bit 40 Ms/sec A/D converter with automatic digital range selection for calorimetry BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 9
3. Measurements on ICECAL_V 3 Board: Sweep on Fin = 400 k. Hz – 10 MHz, Fs = 40 MHz, Vin = 1. 7 Vpp *DS : Information from K. Kloukinas et al 2005. Characterization and production testing of a quad 12 bit 40 Ms/sec A/D converter with automatic digital range selection for calorimetry. BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 10
3. Measurements on ICECAL_V 3 Board: Sweep on Fin = 400 k. Hz – 10 MHz, Fs = 40 MHz, Vin = 1. 7 Vpp • Remarks: • • Important harmonic contribution is reducing SINAD and therefore ENOB. SNR performance is far from ADC Characterization (Board grounding? , Drivers Impact? ) Measurements done without filters, harmonics generated by the F. Generator are visible here (Repeated when filters are available). Measurements done with sinusoid signals, and ADC drivers on Single-to-differential configuration, to see ADC and driver performance for ICECAL differential signals BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 11
4. What if we change the ADC Driver? THS 4521 VS AD 8138 Fin= 2. 5 MHz Fin= 1 MHz THS 4521 AD 8138 All dynamic parameters are improving with AD 8138 BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 12
5. First Acquisitions with ICECAL_V 3 ASIC Only testing ICECAL CH 1 (AC Coupled to ADC Driver) Sub. Ch Ioffset compensation Icecal shows some noise BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 13
5. First Acquisitions with ICECAL_V 3 ASIC Comparative analysis in terms of noise BE-BI-BL Jose Luis Sirvent Blasco (jsirvent@cern. ch) 14
