An impact can be positive or negative. • All organisations have positive and negative impacts on society • Positive impact – good influence • Negative impact – unfavourable influence • We can look at the impact of an organisation from different perspectives: • Economic • Social • Environmental 5 2. 5

ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Example: Silicon Docks is a name given to the area around Grand Canal Dock in Dublin. It is where the Dublin offices of Google, Facebook and Twitter are located. These big companies have attracted other smaller service businesses to the area, for example new cafe s and restaurants. 8 2. 5
ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Social Perspective Impact on Members of a Community Positive Negative • An organisation can sponsor local events • Some smaller local business may close down • Voluntary enterprises can often benefit individuals • Community enterprises benefit the whole community • Influx of more people can sometimes result in anti-social behaviour • Improved infrastructure • Improved living standards • More traffic can bring traffic jams • Improved wellbeing • Pride in community • Resentment or community anger to unethical organisations 9 2. 5
ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Example: The GAA Local community organisations face many challenges, including a lack of finance and volunteers. The GAA is a great example of a strong community organisation. It is Ireland’s largest sporting organisation with over 2, 000 clubs throughout the country, each run by a team of volunteers. 10 2. 5
ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Example: Lauralynn Laura. Lynn is a not-for-profit organisation that provides hospice care to children with life-limiting conditions and support to their families, allowing parents to be ‘Mum and Dad’ rather than full-time carers. The needs of the child and family are at the heart of everything they do, and care is provided where families prefer: at their hospice or in the family home, or in hospital if required. Children from birth to age 18 can be referred for their care from anywhere in Ireland. Care is provided free to families because of the generosity of fundraising efforts and donations from individuals, schools, communities and businesses. 11 2. 5

ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Environmental Impact on Air, Water, Wildlife and Farmland Positive Impacts Negative Impacts • Energy-efficient buildings and work practices set a good example • Organisations can create environmental problems through waste, water, noise, and air pollution • Local employment reduce fuel usage • Need for housing can put pressure on local government to use land that is there for conservation • Rainwater tanks, solar panels, etc, reduce reliance on natural resources • Pressure on local services can make quality control difficult 13 2. 5

ORGANISATIONS’ IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Example: Electric Cars Amsterdam has e-cars. The city promotes sustainable transport through an electric car system known as Amsterdam Electric. When the scheme was introduced, electric vehicles were offered free access to charging points and free parking. Today, e-drivers are automatically placed at the head of parking space waiting lists. 16 2. 5
