Constructing Complete Sentences

Clauses ¢ Clause l. A clause must have a • 1) NOUN • 2) VERB and • 3) a COMPLETE THOUGHT

Clauses ¢ Independent Clause A grouping of words that can stand alone. l Example: “I’ll be back” –Terminator l l An independent clause is often a part of a larger sentence • Example: I’ll be back, and when I come back you better have your homework done!

Clauses ¢ Dependent Clause A grouping of words that CANNOT stand on their own. l Example: “If you are going to let every little thing bother you. ”-The Princess and the Frog l A dependent clause needs independent clauses to help support them. l • Example: “If you are going to let every little thing bother you, it’s going to be a very long night. “

Independent and Dependent Clauses ¢ Independent Clause is like an adult ¢ A dependent clause is like a child.

Simple Sentence ¢ Simple Sentence l This contains one independent clause or is like an adult. Noun Verb “Life is like a box of chocolates. ” Complete Thought

WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE • Subject: Heather • Verb: Joined • Complete Thought: A club at club rush day. • CHECK IT: • Heather joined a club at club rush day.

Compound Sentence This contains two independent clauses or like a married couple. ¢ “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villan. ” –Batman Begins

Compound Sentence ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ The two independent clauses can be combined by a COMMA and a FANBOYS F = for A = and N = nor B = but O = or Y = yet S = so

WRITE A COMPOUND SENTENCE • Subject 1: Maribel • Verb 1: completes • Complete Thought 1: all of her homework • Subject 2: her brother Anthony • Verb 2: steals • Complete Thought 2: all of her homework • FANBOYS: but CHECK IT: Maribel completes all of her homework, but her brother Anthony steals all of her homework.

Complex Sentence This contains an independent clause and a dependent clause or is like a single parent and a child. “They don't exist because this is a movie!” –Last Action Hero

Complex Sentence ¢ Combining Independent Clause (IC) and Dependent Clause (DC): IC no comma DC. or DC , IC. Dependent Clauses start with words like Because, Since, When, Although, Unless.

WRITE 2 COMPLEX SENTENCES Subject 1: Gregg Verb 1: is learning Complete Thought 1: to fly helicopters Subject 2: he Verb 2: wants Complete Thought 2: to be cooler than Justin. Subordinating Conjunction: because CHECK THE 2 SENTENCES: Gregg is learning to fly helicopters because he wants to be cooler than Justin. OR Because he wants to be cooler than Justin, Gregg is learning to fly helicopters.

Compound-Complex Sentence This contains two independent clauses with one dependent clause. It is like two parents and a child. “I know what I like, and I know you know what I like because you are trained to know what I like. ” –Coming to America
