Hand Safety - Sharp Objects Potential hand injuries associated with sharp objects can include: • Cuts or lacerations may happen while using dull cutting tools, handling sharp metals or other material with sharp edges. • Punctures are caused when pointed objects pierce the skin and deeper tissues. Examples of Sharp Objects • Knives and other utensils • Box cutters, utility knives, etc. • Power tools and other equipment with blades or moving parts. • Broken tools, glass, metal shards etc. • Protruding nails, screws, etc. 3 bcmsa. devcogroup. com One of the best and most effective means of primary hand protection is good hand positioning.

Hand Safety – Sharp Objects Protect yourself and others: • Always be aware of hand placement. Always cut away from your body. • Identify and Control hazards of the task before starting the task. • Always use the correct tool for the task. • Wear the glove that is resistant to punctures, cuts, or moisture. • Let falling objects fall. DO NOT grab for falling cutting tools, sharp instruments or glassware. • Use retractable knives whenever possible. • Never work on the same object when a co-worker is using a knife. • Store tools and instruments safely. Ensure that can be easily reached and pose no threat of injury. • Do not carry sharp objects in your pockets or reach into waste bins with your bare hands. • Never bear hug garbage bags, lift and hold them at their tie off point. • Ensure guards are in place on machinery with cutting blades.
