Bavarian Environment Agency Integrating WFD and BHD in Bavaria NATURA 2000 sites in the Bavaria Alps - land of rivers and lakes DE 8430303 „Falkenstein, Alatsee…“ DE 8433303 „Karwendel mit Isar“ DE 8528301 „Allgäuer Hochalpen“ DE 8627302 „Schlappold“ about 80 % of all Bavarian sites are water-dependent 2 Unit 52 Werner Rehklau NATURA 2000

Bavarian Environment Agency Integrating WFD and BHD in Bavaria Important WFD – BHD activities Theoretical approach: International ECONAT peer exchange on synergies (GB-F-NL-D) WHO: Bavarian Environment Agency, Departments Conservation + Water Scientific approach: Combined monitoring of WFD and BHD WHO: Bavarian Environment Agency, Departments Conservation + Water, Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture, Regional authorities Strategic approach: Integrating N 2000 objectives and measures into RBMPs WHO: Bavarian Environment Agency and Regional authorities, Departments Conservation + Water, Local water authorities Practical approach: Integrated planning on regional level WHO: Regional authorities, Departments Conservation + Water, Local water authorities The „great take-off“: LIFE-Project „River Experience Isar“ 3 Unit 52 Werner Rehklau NATURA 2000

Bavarian Environment Agency Integrating WFD and BHD in Bavaria Theoretical approach: ECONAT Peer exchange - targets for “good practice” • Including requirements and measures for water-dependent N 2000 sites in RBMPs • Focussing N 2000 management planning on water-dependant N 2000 -sites primarily • Combining the “cultures” of the different responsible administrations And finally N 2000 and economy: Both rivers and lakes and the N 2000 sitenetwork are the backbone of European natural heritage. This can not be conserved and developed in a sustainable way without providing adequate human and financial resources! Bavarian Environment Agency Integrating WFD and BHD in Bavaria Scientific approach: Combined monitoring Fish • Common monitoring for Art. 17 report in 2013 and 2018 • Few additional plots for N 2000 species not present in WFD´s water bodies, e. g. Misgurnus fossilis • Advantages: ecology (= more fish-friendly research) + economy (= saving money) River habitat types Integrating data from WFD monitoring in N 2000 monitoring (Art. 17 report in 2013 and 2018) Lake habitat types Integrating data from WFD monitoring in N 2000 monitoring (in preparation) 5 Unit 52 Werner Rehklau NATURA 2000

Bavarian Environment Agency Integrating WFD and BHD in Bavaria Strategic approach: Integrating N 2000 objectives and measures into RBMP • Selection of water dependent N 2000 sites • Selection of habitats and species within the selected sites being related to WFD relevant water bodies • 'translation‘ of N 2000 objectives for habitats and species described in existing management plans into WFD‘s hydromorphological objectives and measures • • Integrating selected objectives and measures into RBMPs Setting up implementation schemes for single WFD waterbodies Implementation - example: starting new hydro- and morphodynamic processes in rivers including restoration of habitat type 3240 Alpine rivers and their ligneous vegetation with Salix elaeagnos along The River Isar 6 Unit 52 Werner Rehklau NATURA 2000
