Battling Air Pollution in Hartford County Brian Salagaj
Battling Air Pollution in Hartford County Brian Salagaj – Dr. Irwin - Sociology of the City Overview: Hartford County is the heart of Connecticut. Conducted of the towns, Windsor, Wethersfield, Hartford, Farmington, Middletown, and 24 other towns. With a population of over 892, 000, Hartford county is known as, “the city next to the Big Apple”. However, the county is mostly known for its multiple industrial centers that create steel and metal. With over 15 of these steel mills just found in Hartford, excessive use of steel mills are known to release heavy amount of dangerous chemicals into the air including, CO, SOx, NOx, PM 2. Due to these industries working for years on end, the overall air quality has decreased. Between the years of 2016 and 2018 Hartford County battled ozone pollution. Having high ozone levels can create respiratory problems including lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchitis, for those who live there. Causes: Ø Steel Mills Ø Carbon Footprints from residents Solutions: Ø Since steel mills create the most chemicals that are polluting the air, creating cleaner ways to create steel and metals would help fight the pollution enormously. Ø With a population of over 892, 000, transportation plays a huge factor into polluting the air. To change this, the county must enforce a carpool rule in order to cut back on transportation. Conclusion: In conclusion, Hartford County in Connecticut is in desperate need for a change if or else the population will run into further respiratory problems. In order to do this, the steel mills need to conduct a plan in order decrease the amount of chemicals they release in the air. The people of Hartford also need to help if they want to decrease the air pollution as well. This would mean that the residents would have to enforce carpools when traveling through the city.
