Battle of Antietam • Generals: – Union- George B. Mc. Clellan – Confederate: Robert E. Lee • Purpose: – Union was trying to force the Confederate army to retreat back across the Potomac River into Virginia • Summary: – The Union Army confronted the Confederate army in Sharpsburg Maryland where the Confederates were trying to resupply. The battle lasted all day long and the confederates were forced back into Virginia • Winners/Losers: – Union/Confederate • Importance of battles: – Bloodiest battle of the war
Battle of Gettysburg • Generals: – Union: George Meade – Confederate: Robert E. Lee • Purpose: – Confederate’s attempted to invade the North in order to earn a victory that could end the war • Summary: – Confederate and Union forces ran into each other at Gettysburg, PA. After 3 days of fighting Lee made a huge mistake and had to retreat back into Virginia. It was the last time Confederate forces moved into the North • Winners/Losers: – Union/ Confederate • Importance of battles: – Turning point of the Civil War
Battle of Appomattox Court House • Generals: – Union: Ulysses S. Grant – Confederate: Robert E. Lee • Purpose: – To force the Confederate army to Surrender • Summary: – General Lee was trying to escape Union forces but was pushed back and Surrounded by the Union Army on all sides and was forced to Surrender • Winners/Losers: – Union/ Confederate • Importance of Battles: – Final Battle of he War
