WHAT IS FAKE NEWS? • The English word fake news indicates articles written with invented, misleading or distorted information, made public with the deliberate intent to misinform or spread hoaxes through the media. • The false news is written and published to capture the reader's attention (often with exaggerated or patently false titles).
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF FAKE NEWS ? • It can influence people's decisions • People don’t know what's really going on • It leads to confusion, misinformation and distrust of people
THE SOCIAL DISSEMINATION OF NEWS There are many image and information sharing sites such as facebook, instagram, telegram and twitter.
HOW TO IDENTIFY FAKE NEWS 1. SOURCES: CHECK MORE As soon as you read news that seems to you sensational, compare it. The most immediate way is to check on Google or other online sources if it has been taken and if it is true. 2. CHECK THE TITLE: Look scrupulously at the post to see if there is any anomaly. If it is a post with a link to a site, check the headline: there are in fact many fake news sites that have names that closely resemble those of known newspapers.
3. CHECK THE IMAGE: 4. CHECK THE DATE: Google can help with its image search. You can also use Tine Eye, a site that allows not only to find out what image it is but also when and on which site was used online. Attention to the date of the news. If there is no date, maybe it is a fake article. 5. VERIFY THE SOURCE: Try to verify if the source is really reliable and click on the news link.
ANALYSIS OF A POST • The comic author Luca Bottura decided to attempt a social experiment: he took a picture and created a patently ironic meme with the caption: "Boldrini's resources in Forte dei Marmi shop at Prada with our € 35. Share this picture if you are outraged. " • The image was widely shared on social media, with Italians assuming the pair were "migrants" and becoming outraged they had chosen to embark on an extravagant shopping spree with money from the state. • Actually the picture showed two famous people: the actor Samuel Lee Jackson and the basketball player Magic Johnson.
HOW TO AVOID THE SPREAD OF FAKE NEWS? • to avoid the spread of fake news before sharing it, do some research on the news to verify that it is true • if you don't know the sites where you can recognize a fake news you can copy the image then go to google images and paste it to check if it is a fake news
