House Dust Mites & Dust Allergy ØMany species of the genus Dermatophagoides for example D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae (family Pyroglyphidae) are the main causative agents of house dust allergy. ØThey have been established to trigger naso-bronchial allergy. ØMajor infestants of house dust especially occurring in room corners, humid places, dustbin, old curtain and carpets. ØLength varies 0. 17 -0. 39 mm, short oval to nearly circular in shape, and flattened.
House Dust Mites & Dust Allergy ØWhole mites or their parts or excrement of some species when inhaled, they can cause asthma and other respiratory problems in sensitive individuals. ØFew cysteine proteases or Grp 1 allergens have been recognized as immunodominant allergens involved in dust mite specific Ig. Emediated hypersensitivity. ØDerp 1 derived from D. pteronyssinus causes disruption of intercellular tight junction. Such opening of tight junctions by environmental proteinases may be the initial step in the development of allergic asthma. ØTreatment options – Antihistamines, Corticosteroids, Chromones (mast cell stabilizers), Leukotriene receptor antagonists, Decongestant nasal drops and sprays etc.
